Pregnancy is such a beautiful season, but it can also feel like it goes by in the blink of an eye. Your maternity session is a chance to slow down for a little while and remember this chapter—the anticipation, the excitement, and the love you already have for your baby.
If you're planning your maternity photos, here are a few simple things to keep in mind.
When Should You Book Your Maternity Session?
I recommend reaching out to your photographer around 18–24 weeks to make sure you have plenty of time to choose your date and plan your session.
Most maternity sessions take place around 28–34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully visible while you're still generally comfortable enough to enjoy the experience.
Of course, every pregnancy is different. Your photographer can help you choose the timing that feels right for you.
Choose a Photographer You Connect With
Your photographer is going to be there for some very personal moments, so don't choose based on beautiful photos alone.
Look through their portfolio and notice how their images make you feel. Do you love their lighting and editing style? Do the images feel natural and timeless? Most importantly, can you imagine yourself feeling comfortable with them?
Take a few minutes to read reviews, too. A wonderful experience can make just as much difference as the final photographs.

Choose Something You Feel Beautiful In
Your maternity session is all about celebrating you and the beauty of this season. What you wear should make you feel confident, feminine, and comfortable in your changing body.
At Lunas.Photography, I love using beautiful maternity gowns and carefully chosen fabrics that photograph beautifully in the studio. Soft textures, elegant silhouettes, and timeless colors allow the focus to stay on you and your beautiful bump.
If you're not sure what to wear, don't worry. I’m happy to help you choose something that complements your vision and photographs beautifully with the studio lighting and backdrop.
Embrace the Beauty of a Studio Session
Most of my maternity sessions take place in the studio, where I can create a beautiful, timeless look with intentional lighting and posing.
I love the simplicity of a studio because there are no distractions. The focus stays completely on you—your beautiful bump, your connection with your partner, and this special moment before your baby arrives.
Whether you envision something soft and romantic, elegant and timeless, or a little more dramatic, your session can be tailored to the feeling you want to create.
You don't need to know how to pose or worry about what to do in front of the camera. I'll guide you through each pose and movement so you can relax, enjoy the experience, and simply let yourself be present.

You Don't Have to Know How to Pose
This is one of the biggest things I want expecting moms to know: you don't have to be a model.
You don't need to know where to put your hands or how to stand. That's my job.
I'll gently guide you throughout the session and help you find natural, flattering poses. Some of my favorite photographs happen in the moments between poses—a laugh, a look at your partner, or the way you naturally hold your belly.
So take a breath and trust the process.

Most Importantly, Enjoy This Moment
Your maternity photographs aren't really about having the perfect hair, perfect outfit, or perfect pose.
They're about remembering you.
The woman who was carrying her baby. The excitement of waiting to meet them. The love between you and your partner. The little details of a season that will one day feel like it happened so long ago.
Give yourself permission to slow down, enjoy the experience, and let your photographer take care of the rest.
These photographs are your opportunity to remember how this moment felt.
